How Edge Compute is Reshaping Distributed Energy
Solar and storage operators have been battling a persistent data hardware problem. After a decade of pain, the market is finally speaking up. The solution is not more of the same, expensive, proprietary hardware – it is replacing this old approach, with smarter, cheaper and open solutions at the source.
Here at Ecosuite we’ve been manifesting this vision for a long time. Today, the tip of the spear for our solutions is our Edge Compute Node (ECN). It is a core technical competency and a major product differentiator.
Think of an ECN as a Data Acquisition System (DAS), just better. It doubles as a universal Utility DER gateway, capable of talking to and controlling any Distributed Energy Resource (DER), new and legacy. It offers IEEE 1547 capabilities irrespective of the DER hardware’s specs. And beyond this, ECNs can uniquely host any advanced energy application you might dream up. Examples include predictive machine learning (ML) and AI enabled load forecasting both of which are amplifying the impact of emerging flexibility applications.
Oh, and one more thing…it’s open-source.
We say “the market is speaking up,” because we are actively seeing product pull across several distinct demand drivers. Here is where the ECN is making the biggest impact today:
1. Pain-in-the-DAS Retrofits
Asset operators and managers are increasingly losing data connectivity to their systems due to equipment aging, vendor bankruptcies and dropped support for proprietary hardware. They need immediate, reliable and future proof solutions to get back online. Our ECNs are stepping in as a seamless, vendor agnostic retrofit, and a true painkiller for asset owners. Leveraging the highest quality commercial-off-the-shelf componentry, we deliver the most durable and future-proof solution on the market.
2. O&M Superpowers
We are bringing renewed focus to the Operations & Maintenance (O&M) field experience. By pairing our mobile app with built-in ECN Bluetooth connectivity, we are unlocking a new paradigm for device diagnostics and field tech efficiency. The objective? Make the lives of O&M teams easier. Ecosuite is designed to make sure you only roll trucks when absolutely necessary and this Bluetooth functionality ensures that when you do, your technicians have every piece of diagnostic data at their fingertips, exactly when they need it.
Extending this further, we are also deploying grid edge AI to customer portfolios equipped with Ecosuite ECNs. Right now, our primary focus is inverter anomaly detection – i.e. predicting issues and identifying latent underperformance before they cause major downtime and revenue loss. This is becoming a game-changer for asset managers dealing with high volume and heterogeneous inverter fleets.
3. The Utility DER Gateway
Distribution utilities need help! DER coordination is poised to unlock latent flexibility and distribution grid capacity that operators desperately need, and ratepayers deserve. Our ECNs offer a flexible, cost effective and standardized gateway for abstract aggregation, communication and control of any DER.
But wait, don’t DER manufacturers already meet all of the communication requirements of grid operators? No, they don’t.
Here’s a few reasons why DER Gateways provide a critical unlock for the distributed energy future:
- They present a standard interface that operators can trust, alleviating the headaches that come with juggling multiple new and legacy DER devices, types, data structures, integration requirements, APIs and communication standards.
- They abstract data and control to a level that system operators can actually act on.

- They can introduce technical benefits such as improved local control latency and the ability to leverage ML/AI for enhanced grid edge decision making.

4. Large Load Flexibility
We see increasing acknowledgment from owners of large loads and real estate portfolios that their assets are indeed significant DERs. However, the same technical challenges found on the generation side, exist on the load side: siloed/heterogenous devices, overlapping protocols, and unreliable telemetry. All problems we have already solved with our ECN. So, for example, when customers realize they just need to buy an ECN and an Ecosuite subscription to participate in demand response (DR), rather than give up a significant portion of their revenue upside, they end up buying.
Whether it is implementing automated load control strategies, integrating with Building Management Systems (BMS) or leveraging communication standards like OpenADR to provide the grid with load curtailment services, Ecosuite can help.
Spinning the Software Flywheel
ECN hardware is the foundation, but flexible and scalable infrastructure software is what will drive efficiency for the entire ecosystem. We are doubling down on the software tools that keep the Ecosuite flywheel spinning. Here are a couple of major updates we delivered to our customers:
- The Playground (“Lovable for DERs”): This is an industry-first application of AI. The Playground is a secure environment where organizations can build their own custom apps, tools, and dashboards using generative coding—all built securely on top of Ecosuite’s normalized data taxonomy and grid integration infrastructure. Rather than trying to build every custom feature our clients want, we gave them the tools to build it themselves, faster and smarter. (Watch our live SAMNA demo starting around the 2:40 mark).
- Value-Based Pricing: We updated our pricing tiers from the standard SaaS cookie-cutter labels (Lite, Starter, Pro) to a new model: Analyst, Associate, VP. Why? Because we don’t want buyers comparing our platform to an IT budget; we want them to compare it to their labor overhead. That is the true benchmark for the value Ecosuite delivers.
